Castle Crags Rock Climbing
The approaches to get into the Castle Crags tends to take 1-2 hours, and thus it significantly thins out the crowds. Those willing to make the hike are rewarded with some of the best traditional and alpine style rock climbing that can be found in the state of California. Few climbers, good rock, and all in an amazing setting
Of all the rock climbing routes that Castle Crags has to offer none is more famous than Cosmic Wall. This moderate 5.6 route with run-out sections was first established by Sir Chris Bonington, of Mt Everest fame, on a trip here in 1979. Since that time it has become a California bucket-list climb with good climbing and fantastic views Mt. Shasta and the Castle Crags spires.
Guided Rock Climbing in Castle Crags
California Rock Guides offers private guided rock climbing in Castle Crags for most of the year. However, spring and fall are the best times to climb. For clinics and educational courses we use a small crag just north of Castle Crag near the town of Mt. Shasta called Cantera. We offer almost all of our of clinics and courses include introduction to Rock Climbing, Learning to Lead, Introduction to Aid Climb and Self-Rescue for Climbers here in the Mt. Shasta area.
