The South Face of Charlotte Dome considered one of the 50 Classic Climbs of North America as outlined by the famed book by Roper and Steck. Charlotte Dome itself is a Yosemite-style granite dome deep in Sequoia/ Kings Canyon National Parks backcountry. From the Onion Valley trailhead, the approach includes almost 12 miles of hiking over the 11,800ft. Kearsarge Pass. After hiking two miles of the John Muir Trail (JMT) and down into the Bullfrog Meadows below Charlotte Dome.
A guided climb of the South Face of Charlotte Dome starts on the second day of our trip. The climb takes our team up 12 pitches of fun and engaging alpine climbing. The climb is fun and engaging right off the ground using a variety of techniques and skills. The route builds up to the airy 8th pitch with a mixture of crack, face, and chimney climbing. As the route gets higher on the dome, the difficulty of the climbing eases off to easier slabs and alpine style climbing.
