Fishhook Aretê: From Mt. Whitney the Fishhook Aretê can be seen as a unique spiraling arête on the South side of Mt. Russell leading directly to the summit. This route offers a wide variety of climbing types as well as route finding challenges. The crux pitches come early on the climbing lending the upper pitches to be fast and fun. This route is one of the best technical climbs on any of the California 14,000ft peaks,
Mithral Dihedral: Called by many “the best 5.10a alpine climbing in California.” The Mithral Dihedral is found just on the West side of the crest in Sequoia National Park near the Fishhook Aretê. The route is 7 or more pitches of climbing with a 4th class scramble to the summit. The first five pitches of the Mithril Dihedral are a variety of cracks, from fingers to off-width. In a steep corner. Good stemming and good rests make this an excellent and secure climb for its grade.
East Ridge: It’s not often that a fourth class ridge route is considered a must-do classic but the East Ridge of Mt. Russell is surpassed only by the East Ridge of Carl Heller in that fame. The East Ridge of Russell is jaw-dropping alpine ridge with massive exposure and fun and engaging climbing. While it isn’t the most technical route in the High Sierra the East Ridge of Mt Russell takes good fitness and a serious sense of adventure.
