Route of the Week: First Dose
Route Type: Sport
Pitches: 1, 65 feet
Gear: 5 Draws
Formation: Trippy Rock
There are those times in climbing where the quality of a route really is enhanced or at least shaped by the setting where the climb can be found. For me, First Dose (.10b) is a prime example of this phenomenon. Almost short enough to be a high ball boulder problem it is on its own a fun climb with a few interesting features packed into a small space. Taken in the context of overlooking the amazing views of the North Shore of Tahoe it’s just a splendid and fun climb.
Find It: 3.3 Miles North of Incline Village on Highway 431 (the Mount Rose Highway) there is a steep dirt pull out on the left. This pulls out accesses a gated fire road. Hike up the dirt road for about 200 to 300 meters until you get to a climber trail on the right-hand side. Hike up the hill to Trippy Rock (Incline Rock).
*** I know my detractors will point out this route isn’t in California rather in the State of Nevada. To this point, I respond by saying it’s my blog and I’ll do what I want! ***
P1: (65ft) Start up a pillar to a ledge and step left on a thin slab and finish pulling over a crack/bulge.
Trippy Rock doesn’t have a lot of climbing but does have several steep 5.11s, a 5.9, as well as good bouldering nearby. The back side of Trippy Rock also has some easy 5.5-5.6 top roping that is good for first-time climbers.
