The Southeast face of the Clyde Minaret is a fine and beautiful climb. It is considered one of the "50 Classic Climbs of North America. "Just outside the town of Mammoth Lakes California in the heart of the Ritter Range, a group of peaks called the Minarets dominates the skyline in an iconic fashion. These jagged granite spires couldn't be more aptly named. The centerpiece of this aesthetic group is the famed Clyde Minaret. (named for early mountain climbing pioneer Norman Clyde) This Southeast of Clyde Minaret forms an opposing backcountry wall. The route itself splits the wall on good alpine granite characterized by fun climbing over one of the most beautiful basins in the World.
Starting for the Agnew Meadow this three day guided climb starts with a moderate approach over rocky terrain. The trail passes by high alpine lakes and hiking under the shadows of two other great alpine peaks in their own right, Banner, and Ritter. After a good day's hike, the group arrives at Cecile Lake.
An alpine start brings the group to the base of the Clyde Minaret, and our route begins. For 12 pitches of moderate climbing the route works its way up the face on a series of cracks and dihedrals. Broken only in the middle by an exposed traverse this climb is one of the best in alpine rock climbs on the Eastern Sierra.
A short 4th and easy 5th class scramble around the summit block and on top of the Clyde Minaret. Without a doubt one of the best routes in the country and well worth its distinction as a "50 Classics".
