1 day / Cost: $225.00 / per person with 2 Climbers
Centered in the middle of the Mammoth Lakes Basin this single peak is named for a thick vein of quartzite that runs through its north side. The 5.7 North Arête of Crystal Crag is as unique as the rock formation itself. The route starts with steep yet easy technical rock for two pitches using everything from a chimney to face climbing techniques. An easy third pitch brings climbers through the classic “Crystal Pitch” and then on to more natural fourth class terrain. The route finishes on a fourth class alpine style scramble to the summit. For climbers looking for a slightly more challenging version of this climb, other variations are available. All climbs on Crystal Crag highlighted by spectacular views of the Lakes Basin, the Mammoth Crest, and the Ritter and Clark Ranges of Southern Yosemite.
A guided climb of the North Arête route is ideal for aspiring climbers or someone looking to round out a Mammoth vacation. The less technical nature of the climb makes it perfect for people learning multi-pitch rock. This climb is also often used as a training ground for those who aspire to more technical alpine rock climbs. The route indeed gives the feel of a more significant alpine rock climb with a shorter approach and more leisurely retreat in the event of inclement weather.
